So I was trying to cut an onion yesterday afternoon and after I had cried uncontrollably by merely looking at the onion, I cut my hand because my best friend just sharpened the knife from these malaam guys that usually pass the road shouting what I don't understand. The cut appeared to be deep as my blood was gushing out before my very eyes.
"Add pepper, add pepper" shouted my best friend as I raced to the fridge to get ice to place on the spot. I thought maybe it was the food she was telling me to add pepper so I went on to ask her what she meant by "Add pepper". She told me that pepper stops bleeding very fast though it could be very painful.
"All these science students that don't attend class" I thought as I simply changed the topic (I didn't have time to start arguing). Out of curiosity, I googled "weird ways to stop bleeding" and here are the interesting stuff I found out.
Spider web works!
Using Spider webs is an amazing way to stop bleeding. Just ensure you have cleaned your wound properly before using spider webs, otherwise the risk of infection is too great. Also make sure that there is no spider clinging onto the web so they wouldn't start climbing on your wound.
Grab the nearest spider web you can find (If you cant find any, come to my house. Lol.) and put it on your open wound. It should help the arteries constrict and the bleeding would stop.
Black pepper
Now this one hurts really bad but if you can take it like a man (or a woman), it is worth the pain. Black pepper (i dont know about red pepper o) to stop bleeding has been around for ages. The only reason it is not as popular as some of the other remedies on this list is that (as mentioned before) it stings quite a bit.
The best time to use black pepper is after having cleaned the wound. Just grab your pepper shaker and sprinkle some black pepper on the bleeding area. The bleeding should stop fast. If it doesn’t or you feel like you can’t take the pain, walk over to the nearest sink, open the tap and wash off the pepper (you weakling you…)
Glass
Yep, you heard that right. Glass can be used as a home remedy for bleeding. Ironic, especially if the bleeding you want to stop was caused by a glass cut, but it works.
Glass has an electromagnetic surface that triggers the clotting process of the blood. So next time you get a cut, take some glass and press it against the wound. The blood should start clotting in 5 to 10 minutes. It goes without saying that if you use a shard or piece of glass, there is major risk of you actually injuring yourself more. So don’t be foolish and only use glass with a plain surface.
Sugar
Sugar has natural antiseptic properties along with the ability to aid the blood clotting process. A spoonful of sugar on a cut or scrape should do the trick. Because of its crystalline nature, it is also a water absorbent and so will help the blood dry up and clot..... forget all the English, just sprinkle sugar on the spot.
Flour
Just sprinkle some flour onto your wound and you’ll notice that it begins to dry up the blood quickly. This blocks the blood from flowing outside. If it’s a small cut on your finger that is bleeding profusely, I would suggest sticking your finger in a bowl of flour. It’s a lot of fun!
Alum
Alum(the white stone you use to wash snail) is a soapy block available in many stores that is made up of a number of minerals. The minerals in this rock can speed up clotting and stop bleeding naturally. All you need to do is moisten the alum block, place it on the cut or scrape and hold it for a little while. You don’t need to press the block against the wound, just a little contact with its surface should do the trick. The alum may cause a slight stinging sensation but that’s how you know it is working. Don’t worry it is completely harmless
Ice
Icing is the most commonly known remedy for bleeding. Icing the area of the wound not only helps in the clotting process but it serves as a great pain relief as well. When you apply ice on a wound, it causes the ruptured arteries to constrict and close off. Ice’s ability to treat swollen areas around the wound is also well documented.
While using ice on an open wound, make sure that you don’t apply it directly. Wrap a bunch of ice cubes in a towel before applying it for best results.
Tea Bags
Tea bags work like charm to stop bleeding. It doesn’t matter what kind of tea it is, it can be regular or green or whatever flavor is lying around your house. Just take a tea bag, moisten it with water (don’t drench it) and press it on top of the wound. Hold for a minimum of 10 minutes. This should stop the bleeding.
Tea bags are especially recommended for bleeding in the mouth after like tooth extraction or an injury.
So I learnt new stuff just by cutting my hand but i didnt 'add pepper o", wasn't sure i could bear the pain.
